Uniswap is the DEX that built the AMM model powering all of DeFi. Founded by Hayden Adams in 2018, it replaced order books with a simple formula ,anyone could provide liquidity, anyone could swap instantly, no counterparty needed. By 2020 it was processing billions weekly and had become the dominant on-chain exchange.
The protocol grew from a $100K Ethereum Foundation grant into the largest DEX in DeFi, processing over $2.75 trillion in all-time volume. When SushiSwap forked the codebase in September 2020 and began draining liquidity, Uniswap responded by launching the UNI governance token and permanently transferring ownership of the protocol to its community.
The September 2020 UNI airdrop changed crypto forever. With zero prior announcement, every wallet that had ever touched Uniswap received 400 UNI , worth $1,200 at launch and $16,800 at the May 2021 ATH. Even wallets with only failed transactions qualified. It invented the retroactive airdrop model every major protocol has copied since.

The UNI token launched on September 16, 2020, with an opening price of approximately $3.00 to $3.36. Within the first 36 hours, the token surged nearly ninefold from its initial market cap of around $50 million. The token hit a market cap of over $430 million within its first two days, driven by widespread media coverage and the unprecedented scale of the retroactive airdrop.
