Pendle is a yield trading protocol that allows users to split any yield-bearing asset into two components, the Principal Token (PT), representing the underlying capital, and the Yield Token (YT), representing future yield and trade them independently on a dedicated AMM.
Founded in 2021, Pendle introduced the concept of fixed-rate yield and yield speculation to DeFi. Any productive asset staked ETH, lending positions, liquid staking tokens, restaking tokens can be wrapped in Pendle's Standardised Yield format, split into PT and YT, and traded. Buyers of PT lock in a fixed return to maturity. Buyers of YT gain amplified exposure to yield variations, including points from upcoming airdrops.
Pendle became central to the 2023 to 2024 airdrop meta when protocols like EigenLayer, Ethena, and Kelp began distributing points to their users. YT holders on Pendle received the underlying asset yield plus protocol points, turning Pendle into the primary venue for leveraged airdrop farming. This drove PENDLE to its all-time high of $7.55 in April 2024.

Pendle allocated the highest percentage to liquidity incentives as the team placed a high priority on creating deep and liquid yield markets. Liquidity incentives at 37% are distributed through weekly emissions using a decay model starting at 1.2 million PENDLE per week, decreasing 1.1% weekly until April 2026, then settling at 2% annual terminal inflation. The team holds 22% on a 4-year vest, the ecosystem fund 15% for grants and integrations, investors 10%, liquidity bootstrapping 9% for initial DEX depth, and advisors 7%. The maximum supply is capped at approximately 235.8 million PENDLE with final emissions scheduled to end in April 2026. There was no retroactive airdrop at launch all PENDLE was earned through active protocol participation.

Provide Liquidity
Lock PENDLE for vePENDLE
Trade YT for Airdrop Points
Hold PT for Fixed Yield
For early liquidity providers and long-term participants, yes, significantly.
PENDLE launched at a modest price and spent most of 2021 and 2022 trading below $0.50. The patient holders who accumulated and provided liquidity during the bear market were rewarded when the airdrop meta of 2023 to 2024 turned Pendle into one of the most used protocols in DeFi.
PENDLE went from $0.50 in early 2023 to $7.55 in April 2024 a 15x return for those who had accumulated during the quiet period. vePENDLE holders earning protocol fees and boost multipliers captured additional returns on top of token appreciation.
The unique case of Pendle is that the value was not captured through a traditional airdrop, it was captured by being an early LP and protocol participant at a time when no one was paying attention. That is the rarest type of DeFi reward.
