Arbitrum is Ethereum's leading Layer 2 scaling solution, built using Optimistic Rollup technology by Offchain Labs , a team of Princeton researchers. It processes transactions off the Ethereum mainchain, dramatically reducing fees while inheriting Ethereum's full security. By early 2023, it had become the dominant L2 by TVL, home to GMX, Uniswap, Aave, and hundreds of protocols.
The March 2023 ARB airdrop was the largest L2 distribution in history ,$1.97B to 625,000 wallets using a sophisticated 15-point system that tracked real on-chain behavior over time. Pre-airdrop speculation drove TVL up 147% from $1.5B to $3.7B. The DAO launched simultaneously, giving ARB holders direct governance over one of the most critical pieces of Ethereum infrastructure.

Arbitrum allocated the largest share at 42.78% to the DAO Treasury, giving the community direct control over ecosystem growth and protocol decisions. Team and advisors hold 26.94% on a four-year vesting schedule with a one-year cliff, meaning no insiders could sell until March 2024. Investors take 17.53% under the same vesting terms. 11.62% went directly to individual wallets via the airdrop to over 625,000 eligible addresses. A small 1.13% was reserved for DAOs actively building in the Arbitrum ecosystem. At launch only 12.75% of total supply was in circulation, keeping early sell pressure relatively controlled.
